Big Weekend
It was a big weekend. It was the 10 year anniversary of the September 11th attacks, and it was the start of the NFL season. Wow. What a contrast.
On the one hand, we had a sobering reminder of tragedy. On the other, we had the most popular sport in America give people the chance to drift into a world of fantasy.
These 2 worlds came together in a tribute seen by millions across the country and around the world. The NFL, and each of the cities hosting games, took special care to honor and remember the memory of those that had fallen.
Surprisingly, these polarizing worlds came together quite well. Football is a uniquely American sport and the day commemorated something else that was uniquely American.
In many ways, the day symbolized a great deal of American pride, hope, optimism, and togetherness. The whole country took time to remember and look towards the future. NFL Fans littered parking lots across the country full of hope and optimism for their teams and a chance for some civic pride. After all, every team was 0-0.
For some, like fans of the Browns, the day didn't end as well as it started, but it was still a day to remember. There are very few examples of major events, on opposite sides of the spectrum, that affect the entire nation in a single day.
It's one of those things we all should remember and share with our children or grandchildren one day.
Be sure to post a comment if you have something to say or, as we've shared before, visit this handy list of charities that support the military. It's a great way to support the people that allow us to have our American pride.
Glad we had the backdrop of a meaningful day to put another terrible Browns loss in perspective. Thanks for sharing!
Great post! Makes you think.
It was so nice to see the whole country come together again for just those few minutes to reflect on what a great country we live in and to show our pride and appreciation for those who risk their lives to protect our freedom and keep our country strong.
